I wonder what Deep Rising might have been if, back in 1998, people actually cared about and appreciated horror movies on their own terms instead of through a lens that’s hostile to horror and everything that makes horror worth embracing. Basically, we’re at a point now where actual horror journalists have a say in what is and isn’t good, though maybe in 1998 they didn’t think Deep Rising was good, either.
They’re wrong. It’s great. Always was, and still is. I rewatched it so I could freshen up and bolster the argument I put forth in my first piece for The Guardian, though let’s be real, Deep Rising is so awesome that the argument makes itself.
