“‘Gunpowder Milkshake’: You Can Have A ‘John Wick’-Style Milkshake As A Treat, But It’s Not Much Of A Coherent Movie”

A shame that there’s not much to Gunpowder Milkshake other than action, because the action is for the most part decent; I’m a little surprised to see this coming from Navot Papushado, he of Big Bad Wolves, because that movie plays not at all like Gunpowder Milkshake.

This is fine; directors make movies that cut against type and expectations all the time. But I can’t even get a whiff of Papushado’s interests or quirks as a filmmaker here. It’s all a bit much, and somehow it never adds to anything despite (maybe because of) all that muchness. What I wish all these John Wick riffs realized about John Wick is that it works because of Keanu Reeves and not necessarily because the idea itself is good, or even new. Ah, well.
