Yes, I am playing off of the dek of another recent piece. No, I feel no shame.
I like the Purge movies, for the most part, with the exception of the first Purge movie (not The First Purge, which I was lukewarm on at first and which has grown on me since.) They’re big and obvious and weird, and they don’t disguise their intentions, and the subtext is all text, but James DeMonaco is not a man of subtlety. He writes with a sledgehammer. It works. It’s his style.
I’d be lying if I said that the intersection between this movie, COVID-19, and the 01/06 insurrection wasn’t more interesting to me than the movie itself, but I did like the movie. Need proof? Go read my review for Paste Magazine.
