I talked to Janicza Bravo in 2017 about her film Lemon, speaking from the fishbowl of my Subaru and getting into the details of white mediocrity. Recently, I talked to her again from the much more scenic locale of Martha’s Vineyard, which she was able to enjoy remotely via Zoom; we talked less about whiteness and much more about the role she played in taking Zola King’s story of roadtripping gone wrong and making it into a movie, and whether or not storytellers will turn to Twitter for material now that she’s shown it can be done.
