Oh no, it happened again: A24 produced a horror movie, showed it to limited audiences and mostly just critics, and then slapped a David Ehrlich quote on the poster, because that movie is basically designed to have a David Ehrlich pull quote on it.
I’m down on A24 horror movies because A24 horror movies are usually either smug, stuffy nonsense or they’re In Fabric; if the former they get comically oversold, if the latter they’re buried. In between you have the occasional The Lighthouse, a movie I adore, but for the most part it’s a pretty black and white spectrum. Saint Maud falls closer to the stuffy side; it’s not as bothersome to me as other prestige A24 horror films, but boy, it’s a frustrating experience.
