“‘Peninsula’: ‘Train To Busan’ Sequel Expands The Scale & Emotional Stakes Of The Zombie Franchise”

Expectations being a constant bugaboo when watching movies comprises a chunk of your livelihood, I walked into Peninsula, the sequel to Train to Busan, with no illusions whatsoever that it’d be anything like its predecessor. Bad news: It isn’t. Good news: That doesn’t matter as long as you don’t presume that Yeon Sang-ho absolutely must follow that film up with another reinvention of the zombie sub-genre. Peninsula is standardized zombie stuff with, admittedly, some dodgy CGI*, but there’s so much here that’s good, grimy fun that the routine and the FX feel like minor dings to me.

*Honestly? I have no idea how good or bad the CGI actually is, because I watched this movie on a screener on my laptop, which, reader, let me tell you, my laptop has poor resolution.
