So, funny thing about me: I can’t tolerate cruelty criticism, where the point of the exercise is to roast the subject instead of engaging with it on any meaningful or thoughtful level. Writing negative criticism, as Anton Ego once noted, is fun. But negative criticism should come from an intellectual place instead of an insult comedy place.
I’m saying all this because it means a lot that Romola Garai’s Amulet provoked such a strong response in me that all I can say up front about it is this: I hated, hated, hated, hated, hated this movie.
Obviously this isn’t the whole truth based on my review for Paste Magazine, but for everything I liked about it, I found two other things I didn’t, and honestly, I don’t need to be preached at either. But you can read my review for yourselves.
