How do you do, fellow kids? It’s me, a 35 year old man, writing about being a teenager at the time in my life when I am twice as old as I was when I was a teenager.
Selah and the Spades is quite something, and Tayarisha Poe is quite someone. She is, for starters, the first person I’ve ever spoken to who has addressed me as “bro,” which tickled me to no end. She’s also thoughtful on her feet, which is good, because I tend to ask galaxy brain questions and ignore the much more simply worded ones I write for myself ahead of time. It’s what I do. Might be that’s why I keep getting interview gigs, but honestly, I have no idea.
Anyways. Poe had great insights into her wonderful film, and you can read them in my piece for Paste Magazine.
