Once more I say to thee: It’s Fangoria. Get a subscription if you want to read this piece, and also lots of others by very good horror journalists.
Carnival of Souls is, at least according to my exhaustive anecdotal evidence, one of the best horror movies ever made that gets very little attention compared to other entries in the canon. Last October, after seeing The Lighthouse not once, but once and a half, I saw a few thematic connections between the latter and the former. That’s what we call “smelling a thinkpiece.” (And also it helps that Robert Eggers and I talked briefly about Carnival of Souls together.)
It’s been a while since I wrote this, but hey, better late than never when it comes to talking about these two movies.
