“In Joe Begos’ Bliss, Meat Is Muse”

I honestly forgot all about Almost Human, a body-snatching sci-fi horror flick from 2013 that borrows tons from, of course, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but also the films of John Carpenter; it’s goopy, nasty fun, at least that’s how I felt at the time, but obviously it’s not terribly memorable. I doubt I’ll have the same to say about Bliss six years from now, because, well: It’s fucked up!

I’m not sure if it’s fair to say that Bliss feels closer to whoever Joe Begos is as a filmmaker than Almost Human, but there’s a certain indelible something to the former that the latter is missing. And, following on the heels of Velvet Buzzsaw, it closes the loop on 2019 horror movies focused on the art world, just on the other side of that art world. Did I mention that it’s a gore-fest, too? I didn’t. But that’s also important!
