It’s probably not a surprise to anyone that I love Deadwood, the TV show, so it’s probably not a surprise that I also love Deadwood: The Movie, even if I’m still not 100% convinced that we needed it. The show ends on a perfect note. That final line? Stuff of genius, even if it wasn’t really the note the show was supposed to end on.
So I took that final line with me all the way through Deadwood: The Movie to see where I’d end up. And to see where the movie would end up. Honestly: If this movie never happened, I’d be okay with how season 3 ends (and there’s a whole essay baked into my explanation of why in the piece I’m linking in this here post). But I’m deliriously happy that there’s a Deadwood movie at all, and I’m thrilled to finally get to write some words about this series, about what makes a good ending, and about Al Swearengen.
