“A Modern Take On Popeye For His 90th Birthday”

I grew up on cartoons* as a tot, and one of those cartoons happened to be Popeye, though which incarnation of Popeye I honestly can’t recall. I have a pretty vivid recollection of Bad Day at the Bakery, an episode from The All New Popeye Hour, which ran between 1978 and 1983 and went into syndication after going off the air, so that’s probably it. Long story short, I loved Popeye, and it didn’t occur to me until recently, but I still do.

That’s great, because Cartoon Club has brought back E.C. Segar’s old traditions by giving artists a stage for reimagining Popeye for the 2010s, which I also love. And because I’m me, I paid tribute to the Club’s new strips, and also took a moment to briefly mention Robert Altman’s 1980 live action movie, because why wouldn’t I.
