We goofed! We didn’t manage a Criterion round-up for December. I mean, I guess technically, Criterion goofed, because none of us got our review copies, but I’ll be gentle; I imagine this kind of thing happens during the holidays, at least every once in a while*.
But we’re back in force for 2019 with our January blurbs. My Mikey and Nicky thoughts are by now well-known, because I already published them in this month’s Films By Women spotlight, but now you get to read thoughts on Notorious, on 24 Frames, the final film by the master, Abbas Kiarostami, and In the Heat of the Night, which I also got my hands on but which I’m saving my thoughts on for a larger piece.
Short version: What does In the Heat of the Night say to us today when Green Book is the feared future Best Picture winner at this year’s Oscars? Long version: Well, that’s yet to come.
You can read the full round-up at Paste Magazine.
*This is the only time this has happened to me since I started doing these.
