True story: On first hearing of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, I wrote it off and put it out of my memory, thinking, “this sounds like a pretty naked excuse to put a bunch of different Spider-Man variations into a single movie for the purpose of moving lots of ancillary product, and also most Marvel movies aren’t very good, so nah, I’m good.”
How things change. First reactions trickled over Twitter, and these reactions were positive, which grossly understates their overwhelming enthusiasm for the film. Second and third reactions gushed and poured across social media not long after, and I said to myself, “Okay, I’ll check this thing out.” And then my turn came, and yeah, the excitement is well-justified and then some. If you just kinda like comic book movies, you’ll probably end up loving this. If you have a deep-rooted fondness for Spider-Man specifically that dates back to your younger years, you’ll definite love it, and you’ll love it even more.
I’m the latter. Spider-Man has always been my favorite superhero. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse wonderfully demonstrates why.
But to find out the why, and the accompanying how, you’ll have to read my full thoughts on the movie over at Men’s Health.
