Well, you can’t win ’em all.
Thought exercise: Even if I did like Suspiria and Hereditary (they’re bad), I’d probably put Mandy ahead of them both. Mandy is a distinct horror throwback, but the film feels current, of the moment, a time capsule for reviewing its era sans wistful nostalgia, and it frankly stands to move the genre forward in more positive ways than its better-liked contemporaries. Plus: Nicolas Cage is a god, and this is one of his best performances.
All that aside, there’re plenty other horror movies out this year that I’ll happily, heartily recommend, including The Endless, and Halloween, and The Clovehitch Killer, and of course Revenge, even though I’m not totally comfortable qualifying that one as “horror” despite the close relationship women’s revenge movies have with the horror genre. Reads as more of a thriller. Still great, though!
