Review: The First Purge, 2018, dir. Gerard McMurray

Fourth verse, same as the first, a little bit better, but it couldn’t be worse.

Okay, okay. Fine. I’ll stop ragging on The Purge, the first movie in the Purge franchise, and start praising The First Purge, the fourth movie in the Purge franchise, even though The First Purge lags behind The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year. Parts of The First Purge feel nearly amateur-level to me, which makes no sense being as this is now a five year old series; it should feel the most refined all around. Instead, it feels only refined in terms of presentation of the actual Purge event. Everything else staggers and stumbles. But I guess that’s okay, because there’s plenty of good Purging to go around, plus Y’Lan Noel is a total badass. (Got to give some love to Gerard McMurray, too, who directed the very good Burning Sands back in 2017.)

Vibe with my review over at Paste Magazine.
