Review: Before We Vanish, 2018, dir. Kiyoshi Kurosawa

There’s no reason I should be giving a new Kiyoshi Kurosawa movie a sub-positive review score. Wait, hang on, let me start over: There shouldn’t be a reason for me to give a new Kiyoshi Kurosawa movie a sub-positive review score, but hey, Kurosawa gave me about three or four, so here we are. After reviewing Creepy back in 2016, Before We Vanish is a distinct disappointment for me, not bad enough to really demand the label of “bad” but bad enough that I really can’t justify over-praising it for the elements I actually appreciated. It’s half a great film and half a baffling mystery, because I cannot understand how Kurosawa could watch his secondary plot in action and think “this is fine.”

Quick! To Paste Magazine with you, which is where my review of Before We Vanish is published!
