I exhausted my brain writing about Hale County This Morning, This Evening for The Playlist, so I’m leaving this intro short. Basically: You really need to see this movie. You also need to see it on a big screen, which is something I rarely demand when recommending documentaries. Hale County This Morning, This Evening is fucking beautiful. It’s also challenging as hell, belying its subject matter. A movie about everyday life becomes complex the more you play with form, as director RaMell Ross does, and oh man I’m not leaving this short at all, dammit. (Conclusion: I really hope the film’s success at Sundance ’18 means it gets the arthouse play it deserves. Seriously, you need to see this movie.)
