Gang: It’s been a gross, terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week. It’s been a gross, terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week for a slew of reasons, but I’m here today to talk about the Harvey Weinstein scandal (which isn’t quite a “scandal,” because sexual abuse isn’t scandalous; it’s criminal). Because I am me, I can think of no better way to talk about that scandal than by framing it through horror, specifically through a handful of very, very good horror films directed by women and hinged on female anxieties, fears, and woes. My “in,” such as it is, is The Lure, a terrific cannibal mermaid horror musical from Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczynska, which I saw earlier this year and which just came out on Blu-ray via The Criterion Collection on Tuesday.
But I bet I had you at “cannibal mermaid horror musical,” didn’t I? Just go to The Hollywood Reporter and read the piece.
