The last Lone Scherfig thing I saw was 2015’s The Riot Club, and I don’t mind saying that her latest film, Their Finest, is a step up from that. (Not that The Riot Club is bad or anything. I just wish she’d gotten to the point faster, though years later I wonder if that’s a burn on me and not a burn on the film. Anyhow.) If The Big Sick is a great example of the rom-com done right, Their Finest is a great example of the rom-com done differently, sans slavish loyalty to demands and expectations of its form. Any moment Scherfig comes close to indulging rom-com tropes too much, she subverts them, or rejects them, and in either case she makes damn well sure we have a good time.
Their Finest hits Blu-ray today, so I wrote about it for Paste Magazine, because I never miss an opportunity to write about things (and also get free stuff at the same time).
