I’ll admit it: I have a hard time writing about The Get Down, not for lack of things to say, but because there’s so much that can be said and should be said about it, and so much that needs to be said to satisfy the purpose of a recap. This is what I get for knocking out two episodes in a single piece, right?
The consolation prize is that The Get Down is such a broad show (despite its very specific point of focus) that it’s easy to find an angle for writing about a duo of episodes at a time. Speaking to “One by One, Into the Dark” and “Gamble Everything,” that angle is “youth,” because damned if the kids in the show actually feel like kids of late. (I probably don’t do enough justice to Herizen Guardiola’s work as Mylene in this regard, but she’s a phenom.) You’ll have to actually pore over the whole thing I wrote for Paste Magazine, though, because I’m not going to regurgitate it here.
