Review: Deepwater Horizon, 2016, dir. Peter Berg

And here we are again, with Andy staring down the barrel of a movie asking himself a fundamental question: “Who the hell is this stupid thing for?” That movie is Deepwater Horizon, the first of two Peter Berg/Mark Wahlberg collaborations in 2016, both of which revolve around real-world tragic events. (The other one is Patriots Day, which comes out in December. I’m from Boston. Ask me how I feel about that sucker.) It isn’t terrible, really, but it is exploitative and melodramatic and unsatisfying as most movies of its kind tend to be. Maybe it’s your cup of tea. Maybe you’re the person Berg made it for. He didn’t make it for me, though, which is the spirit of my review for Paste Magazine.
