Review: Other People, 2016, dir. Chris Kelly

I’m not quite as in the bag on Chris Kelly’s Other People as some of the film’s more effusive proponents, but you know what? It’s still a solid first movie, and as “sad dudes with cancer friends/family” stories go, it’s light years ahead of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which you all may recall I fucking despise. Unlike that movie, this movie invests in its cancer patient (played with tremendous force by Molly Shannon) instead of treating her as window dressing at worst and as a catalyst for the protagonist’s growth at best. (Kelly also takes the piss out of the very idea of big, life-changing catharsis in the death of another, which helps.) Paste Magazine kindly let me review this one, and I think you should all go read it because c’mon, it’s literally the least you can do.
