Interview: Taika Waititi, “Hunt for the Wilderpeople”

I got to talk with Taika Waititi, director of the excellent Hunt for the Wilderpeople, for Paste Magazine last month; the interview is up, and it would just be keen if you all read it. Hunt for the Wilderpeople is wonderful (hence why it is on my “favorites of the year to date” list), and Taika is equally so, smart, thoughtful, funny, and best of all incredibly kind.

Watching films like this always leads me on a chase to figure out their influences. If you had ten people list out Wilderpeople‘s presumed influences, they might each come up with ten unique lists; the film is its own thing, and proof of Taika’s unique voice in cinema. But I’m ruining the piece for you now, so I’ll stop writing and hope that I’ve convinced you to check it out.
