Bill and I are back with another Double Take over at Go, See, Talk!; today, we’re tackling End of Watch, David Ayer’s newest attempt at carving out a name for himself in the “gritty cop drama” genre. Seems like all Ayer really has in him are stories about the policemen and gangs roaming the streets of South Central, and all he’s really interested in is exploring bonds of brotherhood among thieves and law enforcers alike. That’s actually fine, since End of Watch has a great story and features two outstanding central performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña, but oh my god does that shaky found footage conceit undermine the movie’s substance.
