An Introduction

After writing on the web for three and a half years, it seems prudent to not just revise this introductory bit, but scrap it and start fresh. Frankly, nothing is the same today as it was when I first created this thing back in 2009.

The first thing you need to know about me: I love movies. Not just sitting and watching them, because anybody can do that, but analyzing them, discussing them, picking them apart, sussing out their better and worse merits. I’ve recently come to believe that it’s very, very hard to make a movie that’s genuinely irredeemable, and I can credit that thought with the amount of time I spend mulling films over- whether that’s in writing, where I’m basically talking to myself until I hit the “Post” button, or in person with other film writers and cineastes. Even the blandest and most forgettable movies have an element or two that’s worth writing home about (but not necessarily worth seeking out the movie in question for).

The second thing you need to know about me: I don’t write here anymore. Not really. Apart from the odd review here and there (my Side Effects review, posted in January, is the most recent thing I’ve published on the site), A Constant Visual Feast now just exists as a record of all the writing I’ve done for the web since I set out to become a film writer/journalist three years ago (and change). Currently, I split my time writing for Go, See, Talk! and Screen Rant; for the latter, I write movie news pieces, for the former, movie reviews and editorials, not to mention the occasional interview.

So if you want to take a look at my writing, you’re free to go through the archives here and see what my work used to look like- or you can head over to Go, See, Talk! and Screen Rant to see where I’m at today. It’s been a pretty crazy ride these last couple of years between being tapped to write for Go, See, Talk! and being given a recommendation to the folks at Screen Rant; here’s hoping that things keep getting better and better as time goes on.

  2. Hey, just to let you know that I nominated you for a Kreativ Blog Award, which is a viral/spam thing – kind of a pass-it-on kudos for your good work. Anyway, keep up the good work.

  5. Great blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m completely confused .. Any suggestions? Cheers!

  7. Just logged on to check my WordPress site and this is at the top – your review of Drive had me clicking straight away!! Bloody love the film. This blog is so fantastic to have stumbled upon. Your passion is a really beautiful thing and I hope you realise quite how much people get out of reading it. Trust me, you’ve got a firm repeat visitor from the UK…..!!

  8. Hi, giving you the VBA award. I’m coming back for more movie reviews. I think it’s nice that someone without strong background in film can still write good reviews. Makes me a little bit jealous ‘coz I try to do it sometimes (without so much success, mind).

    • Thanks Joe! Second time I’ve been awarded the VBA, very much appreciated.

Having a strong film background helps for someone reviewing movies, of course, but having a good writing background probably helps just as much if not more since you learn about film in the process of writing about it. That said, I do go out of my way to brush up on film literature when I can, so hopefully that has begun to spring up in my writing.

  9. Hey Andrew, to be honest i’m not entirely sure how i found my to your blog, through a succession of blogroll links i think! Anyway, thought i’d let you know i read a few of your reviews and really enjoyed them, nicely written and accessible. Keep it up!

  10. Hi Andrew! Fellow writer here myself, sometimes pertaining to films- sometimes not. Hopped over from your discussion of “Kill List” on IMDB, you seemed the only person in the thread to have considered much of the same things I had about “KL,” and it was well-written to boot. Always happy to meet a like-minded blogger or writer =)
    Wendy

    • Well, thanks very much Wendy! I’m happy you made your way over here– and I’m glad you liked my thoughts on Kill List! I’ll probably do an analysis of the film sometime soon (since it’s out in theaters now), so feel free to jump in then. Hope to hear from you more often!

  12. Do you mind if I quote a few of your posts as long as I provide credit and sources back to your webpage? My blog is in the very same area of interest as yours and my users would truly benefit from some of the information you present here. Please let me know if this alright with you. Thanks!
